2016-2017 Recipients

The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association and Volleyball Manitoba are pleased to announce the 2016-2017 recipients of the Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Volleyball Scholarships. These $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually in memory of Selkirk, Manitoba volleyball player, Dr. Dale Iwanoczko.

Dale began his volleyball career playing for Lord Selkirk Regional High School and the University of Manitoba Bisons where he was named a five-time All-Canadian.  He was selected as the CIS/CIAU Most Valuable Player in 1990, and led the Bisons to the national championship title in 1991.  He also played on Manitoba’s Provincial and Canada Games Teams.  Dale was selected as Valedictorian, Governor General Award winner, and Athlete of the Year at Lord Selkirk Regional Secondary School (Gr 11 & 12).  He obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba, and sadly passed away at the age of thirty, after succumbing to Hodgkin’s disease, a battle he had fought valiantly for fourteen months.  Several of Dale’s friends have organized an annual golf tournament to raise funds for this scholarship which is named in his honour and memory.

To be eligible for this scholarship a student must be proceeding to a post-secondary institution and have a minimum 75% academic average.  The individual must have proficiency in volleyball, while academic standing, and involvement in their school and community are also considered.

This year four student athletes have been selected:

Owen Schwartz is the left side for the Lord Selkirk Royals and maintains a 91% average.  In addition to volleyball, Owen also plays club volleyball and has been awarded the Dennis Nord MVP award as well as being a part of the 2016 Boston Pizza ‘AAAA’ Provincial Volleyball Championship team.  He plays basketball, soccer, water polo and participated in his school’s grad fashion show, as well as volunteering to referee and score keep at school tournaments and games.  He will be attending the University of Manitoba in the Physical Therapy Degree program and is looking to play for the Bison volleyball team.  Owen demonstrates outstanding school leadership and exemplifies the core values of respect, integrity, accountability and empathy.

Georgia-Rae Maxwell is a left side and Libero for the Elton Collegiate Sabres.  In addition to volleyball, Georgia-Rae also competes in badminton, basketball, track at school while also playing in the women’s soccer league and on the community baseball team.  She is a member of the student council, sings in the church choir and is a member of the school band and choir.  She volunteers at the Humane Society and her local church, as well as being a volunteer referee for junior high volleyball and basketball, all while maintaining a 99% average.  She plans to attend the University of Winnipeg in the Pre-Veterinarian Studies program and hopes to play volleyball at the CIS level.

Taylor Kleysen is the captain and right side of the Vincent Massey Collegiate Trojans.  She maintains an academic average of 90% all while participating in basketball as well as volleyball.  She is a Special Olympics volunteer, and a member of the grad committee.  She is a coach and certified referee at Henry G Izatt middle school, has performed in her school’s choral, dance and musical theatre productions, and volunteers at the Victoria General Hospital.  She is planning on going into the Education program at a Manitoba university and would like to play volleyball at the University level and beyond.

Dylan Sutherland is the setter for the Vincent Massey High School Vikings in Brandon.  He maintains an academic average of 92% and plans to pursue a degree in Engineering and continue to play volleyball at the university level.  He is a volunteer referee and volunteers at the Samaritan House Food Bank.  Dylan is a peer tutor, the team captain of his volleyball and basketball teams at school, volunteers for the school’s Heritage Days and works on the school’s major production, and has achieved a grade 7 level in piano with the Royal Conservatory.
