Volleyball Manitoba Scrimmage Series

Volleyball Manitoba is pleased to offer a new opportunity to compliment your team’s regular weekly training during the club season. Registration is now open for teams to participate in Volleyball Manitoba Scrimmage Series matches at the Canada Games Sport for Life Center on Friday evenings starting January 19th from 6-9:15 pm.

The Volleyball Manitoba Scrimmage Series was designed to provide teams the opportunity to compete against others of a similar level who they may not get the chance to play in regular tournaments. In this game-like training environment coaches and players will be able to;

  • Apply new skills they have been working on during their training without the pressure of tournament play or rankings.
  • Try new line-ups or have players try new positions before a weekend tournament.
  • Provide court time for developing players that they may not otherwise have in regular tournament play.
  • Play competitive 6 on 6 if your team has fewer than 12 players.
  • Work on situational strategies and substitutions
  • Build camaraderie with other teams and coaches.

Each Friday will feature a different age class and gender. Teams will be asked to declare their level of play as AA* or A so they can be placed in the appropriate pool of 4.  (*The AA pool will be considered the higher level.)  Volleyball Manitoba will verify each declaration to ensure an appropriate level of competition in each pool.  In the event that there are not a minimum of 3 teams registered for a particular division, that division may not run or an alternate format will be considered. In the event one division has enough teams for 2 pools of 4 while the other does not meet the minimum required, Volleyball Manitoba reserves the right to offer 2 pools of the same level.

Competition Outline:

  • Each team will play 3 sets to 15 points against each of the other teams in their pool for a total of 9 sets.
  • Teams will have 15 minutes to warm up on court from 6:00-6:15 prior to the first match. Following the first match, any further warm-up time will depend on the length of the 3 sets.
  • Match start times will be 6:15, 7:15, 8:15
  • Matches will be played cross court at the Canada Games Sport for Life Center
  • MVOA Referees will be used for all matches.
  • Warm-up balls will be provided for the appropriate age group. MVA 200 or VQ 2000.
  • Scrimmage matches DO NOT count towards Provincial ranking.
  • All regular Volleyball Canada rules will apply.
  • 13U Scrimmages will be played using triple ball format.
  • All teams participating must be registered members of Manitoba Volleyball Association (Competitive, Youth Development Player, Program Participant)

Cost: $125 per team + GST

Team Manitoba Regional Strength and Conditioning: January – May 2018

Winnipeg Training

Volleyball Manitoba will once again offer a periodized strength and conditioning program for interested athletes beginning in January 2018.  Led by Sport Manitoba performance staff, this program will help athletes build strength, speed and power throughout the club season and peak for the 2018 Volleyball Canada Nationals in May.

Athletes are expected to train twice per week – Monday at 7pm and Thursday at 6pm – at the Sport Manitoba Performance Center 145 Pacific Avenue. The first 10 week block will begin on Monday, January 15th and conclude on Thursday, March 22nd.  Following spring break, sessions will resume on Thursday, April 5th and conclude Thursday, May 10th.

Training twice weekly will allow for athletes to see maximum gains from the program while still being able to train on court at a high level.  Performance center staff will work with each athlete to make sure that workouts are adjusted to account for varying on court volumes throughout the club season. Athletes can expect training to include proper lifting technique, speed, strength, vertical jumps, shoulder health, physical testing, among other topics.

It is strongly recommended that you discuss this training schedule with your club coach prior to committing to the program to ensure that you can attend both weekly sessions for the majority of the program.  Occasional absences due to illness or out of town travel are acceptable however, if an athlete is not able to regularly meet the commitment required, they will be removed from the program for their own health and safety.

Program Cost – $295 plus GST.

Regional Training

The Team Manitoba strength and conditioning program will be offered regionally beginning early in 2018. Athletes will follow the same program duration as the Winnipeg program. All programs will start the week of January 15th.  These dates and times are based on having a minimum of 8 athletes registered for each of the programs.  Should a program not reach the minimum number of athletes required, athletes may be combined with those from a different sport and the session day and time may change.

Program Cost – $295 plus GST.

MTS SUPER-SPIKE raises $87,936 – proceeds supporting local charities in 2017

MEDIA RELEASE

Wednesday, November 8, 2017

The snow may have arrived for the season, but the heat from this past summer’s MTS Super-Spike presented by Bud Light has not stopped.  The event has now officially closed the books on the year, and is excited to announce that $87,936 was raised, with 100% of the funds going back to support Volleyball Manitoba and local charities in our community.  Fifty percent of the funds raised are being allocated to annual host organization and event partner Volleyball Manitoba, while the other fifty percent is being split with Kid Sport Manitoba and The True North Youth Foundation, each receiving $21,984, as this year’s pre-selected event charities of choice.

MTS Super-Spike, which took place this past July 21 & 22 at Maple Grove Rugby Park, combines Western Canada’s largest outdoor/beach volleyball tournament with a weekend-long concert series, all set in a festival atmosphere.  The event saw 464 teams and 3,472 players take part, the second highest total of registered players in its sixteen year history.  Including the volleyball players, just under 6,000 people walked through the gates this year.

“We are enormously grateful for MTS Super-Spike’s support of KidSport Manitoba this year. One hundred percent of these funds will be used to remove barriers and help less fortunate children participate in sport – so all kids can play.” – Jeff Hnatiuk, President & CEO, Sport Manitoba

“The True North Youth Foundation was extremely humbled to be chosen as a beneficiary of MTS Super-Spike this year. What a fantastic event for our Province to lay claim to. We look forward to implementing the funds we’re receiving to help build new beach volleyball courts at Camp Manitou.” – Dwayne Green, Executive Director, True North Youth Foundation

“We are thrilled to have taken on one of Manitoba’s best summer events under the Volleyball Manitoba umbrella and become its staple annual beneficiary. These funds will help us considerably as we work to enhance our programming in the areas of sport initiation, performance pathway and technical leadership, benefiting young volleyball players, provincial teams, coaches and referees. We look forward to hosting and helping to continue its success for years to come.” – John Blacher, Executive Director, Volleyball Manitoba

MTS Super-Spike is a significant local charitable fundraiser with over $1 million raised to date.  Formerly a fundraiser for the National Women’s Volleyball Team who recently relocated to Richmond, B.C., MTS Super-Spike now splits its proceeds between Volleyball Manitoba and two rotating new charities each year selected through an annual application process.
